11-Run Eighth Inning Gets Scarlet Raiders Past Baruch

RUTGERS-NEWARK BASEBALL

Matt Larangera
NEWARK, NJ – Sophomore catcher Christian Kasa's bases loaded triple keyed an 11-run eighth inning which lifted Rutgers-Newark to a 16-13 win over Baruch College in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

The Scarlet Raiders (8-7) trailed the Bearcats (5-11), 13-5, entering the bottom of the eighth, but pushed across 11 runs on just four hits while taking advantage of four walks, two hit batters and two Baruch errors against four Bearcat pitchers to get the improbable victory.

Kasa went four for four and missed the cycle by a home run. He had an RBI single in the second inning, lead-off doubles in the fourth and sixth, and the bases-clearing triple which made it 13-12 with no one out in the eighth.

Junior Mike Ciaramello chased Kasa's triple with another triple to plate the tying run before he scored the winning run on a passed ball as senior second baseman Matt Connors took ball four for his fourth walk of the game. Connors scored four times while stealing three bases.

A two-run single by senior centerfielder Michael DiCenso capped the eighth-inning explosion. DiCenso went three for four and scored three times.

Junior righthander Nick Evans (1-0) got the win despite giving up two runs on three hits in two innings of work.

Sophomore closer Matt Larangera came on the ninth to strike out the side and pick up his third save of the season.

Rutgers-Newark opens New Jersey Athletic Conference play with a Saturday doubleheader at New Jersey City. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
