FAIRFIELD, CT – Senior outside hitter
Grant Metheny paced Rutgers-Newark with 14 kills, but Sacred Heart stopped the Scarlet Raiders, 3-1, in an EIVA match in the Pitt Center.

Metheny had an ace and an assisted block to notch 15.5 points, but the Pioneers (5-18, EIVA 2-9) got double-digit points from four players to win 25-16, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, and hand the Scarlet Raiders (8-12, EIVA 1-9) their ninth straight conference loss.

Brett Pickens each had 11 kills and an assisted block for Rutgers-Newark while senior libero
Zack Chambers came up with a match-high 11 digs. Freshman setter
Manuel Felipez distributed 41 assists while adding an ace, a solo block and two assisted blocks. Senior outside hitter
Marcin Midura was limited to seven points on six kills and a solo block.
Freshman middle hitter
Lorenzo Samin got in on a match-high five blocks with a pair of solos and two assisted blocks while adding three kills.
Sacred Heart was led by sophomore outside hitter Bradley Borsay with 15 kills, an ace, a solo block and an assisted block for a match-high 17.5 points. The Pioneers also got a dozen kills from sophomore right side Nick Hunt as they earned a split of their regular-season series with the Raiders.
After Sacred Heart hit .400 (15-2-26) in game one and .500 (10-2-20) in game two, the Raiders battled to a 25-23 win in the fourth frame. A Pappas kill broke a 23-23 tie and set up a set-ending attack error by the Pioneers.
In the final game, Borsay had four kills, an ace and a solo block to give Sacred Heart the edge.
Rutgers-Newark is at Kean University on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for a non-conference match before returning to The Golden Dome on Saturday for a 2 o'clock EIVA match against George Mason.
