NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team faced a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference contest against Rutgers Univrsity-Camden Thursday afternoon and came up short, dropping a tough 10-1 decision in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The Scarlet Raiders (13-21, NJAC 6-9) sent ace senior right-hander Michael Garcia to the mound to face the tough Scarlet Raptors lineup, but Garcia was not at his best, surrendering six earned runs and seven hits in just 4 1/3 innings, dropping to 3-2 on the season.

The Raptors (23-9, NJAC 11-4) moved into a tie at the top of the NJAC standings with Rowan (26-7, NJAC 11-4) with the win while the Scarlet Raiders found themselves in a three way tie for fifth place with just three games left on the regular-season slate.  Rutgers-Newark is deadlocked with The College of New Jersey (17-15, NJAC 6-9) and Stockton (16-15, 6-9) in a battle for one of six conference championship playoff berths.  Lurking a game behind the trio are Ramapo (19-13-1, NJAC 5-9-1) and William Paterson (11-18-1, NJAC 5-9-1).

Left-hander Ron Reagan was extremely tough on the home team, going the distance, scattering seven hits and just one earned run for his sixth win of the year against three losses.

The Scarlet Raiders got their lone run in the fifth inning, when Nick Gencarelli was hit by a pitch and came home to score on Gerry Patrizio's double.

Jason McCluskey was the lone R-N player to have two hits, collecting a pair of singles.

Senior rightfielder Adrian Gonzalez had three hits to give him 101 for his career, scored twice and had an RBI for the Scarlet Raptors, who banged out 15 hits in the win. Freshman catcher Jon Theckson also had three hits and two RBI for the winners. Junior centerfielder Bobby Romano had two hits, but belted his first homer of the season, a three-run shot in the ninth inning that capped the scoring.

The Scarlet Raiders will face Rutgers-Camden again Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in Camden. The Raiders close out the regular season with a doubleheader on the campus of Rutgers University in Piscataway on Saturday, facing William Paterson at 11:30 a.m. on Bainton Field.  It will also be Senior Day, as the Scarlet Raiders seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
