Basebal Drops Doubleheader Against Franklin & Marshall

NEWARK, NJ - Rutgers-Newark (8-10) dropped a doubleheader against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon at Weequahi Park.

Game 1: Franklin & Marshall 13, Rutgers-Newark 3

Rutgers-Newark's baseball team was handed a tough loss in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader, falling 13-3 to Franklin & Marshall College. The Scarlet Raiders struggled to contain the visiting Diplomats' offense, which exploded for seven runs in the opening frame and never looked back.

Franklin & Marshall took control right from the start, scoring seven runs in the first inning off Rutgers-Newark starter Luke Hagen. The early barrage gave the Diplomats a commanding 7-0 lead. Rutgers-Newark responded in the bottom of the second when Paul Recchia singled to score the Scarlet Raiders' first run, cutting the deficit to 7-1.

However, the Diplomats continued to pile on the runs, adding two in the second inning and another two in the third to push the lead to 11-1. Rutgers-Newark showed some resilience, plating two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Franklin & Marshall answered with two runs of their own in the seventh inning to seal the game early due to the run rule, 13-3.

Recchia provided some bright spots offensively for the Scarlet Raiders, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. However, the offensive output wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit. Franklin & Marshall finished with 11 hits in the game while Rutgers-Newark tallied six.

On the mound, Franklin & Marshall's Bijan Anvar earned the win, tossing five solid innings while allowing just one earned run and striking out eight. Hagen struggled in the start, allowing seven earned runs in just 0.1 innings pitched, which contributed to the tough loss for the Scarlet Raiders.

Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 19, Rutgers-Newark 7

The Rutgers-Newark baseball team struggled to contain Franklin & Marshall's potent offense in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, falling 19-7 in a high-scoring affair at Weequahic Park.

The Diplomats got on the board first with a run in the top of the third inning and then extended their lead with two more runs in the fourth to go up 3-0. However, the Scarlet Raiders quickly answered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs to tie the game at 3-3.

But Franklin & Marshall quickly regained control, scoring six runs in the top of the fifth inning, followed by two more in the top of the seventh. The Diplomats' offense didn't slow down, adding another eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to earn the run rule victory.

Rutgers-Newark showed some late fight, plating four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to close the gap as Franklin & Marshall cruised to the 19-7 victory.

The Scarlet Raiders finished with 11 hits, with Devin Rojas and Tommy Ruth both delivering strong performances at the plate. Rojas went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Ruth also went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs.

On the mound, Peter Mullen earned the win for Franklin & Marshall, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just two earned runs while striking out seven. Rutgers-Newark's Chase Ostrowski suffered the loss, allowing two earned runs and three total in 3.2 innings of work, with three strikeouts.

With the defeat, the Scarlet Raiders will look to regroup and improve their performance in future match-ups as they continue their season. The Scarlet Raiders return to the field on Tuesday, March 25 at Arcadia for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
