Scarlet Raider Baseball Sweeps Rochester

NEWARK, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark baseball team swept Yellow Jackets of the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon at Weequahic Park. The Scarlet Raiders improved to 4-5 on the season after a successful game of ball.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 12, Rochester 4
In a dominant performance on Sunday afternoon, the Rutgers-Newark baseball team defeated the University of Rochester 12-4 at home in game one of the doubleheader. The Scarlet Raiders took control early and never looked back, powered by an 18-hit attack and a stellar pitching performance from Matthew King (3-0).

Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 4-0 lead with one run in the third inning and three more in the fourth. The Yellow Jackets responded with a run in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-1, but the Scarlet Raiders answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning to extend their lead to 6-1.

Rochester scored again in the sixth and the ninth, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the explosive Rutgers-Newark offense. The Scarlet Raiders added six more runs, including a four-run burst in the eighth, to put the game out of reach.

King earned the win on the mound, tossing 7.0 innings while allowing just three hits and one earned run. He walked two batters and struck out seven in a commanding performance, facing 25 batters. Thomas Blaydes took the loss for Rochester, giving up nine hits and four earned runs in 3.2 innings of work, with four strikeouts.

Offensively, the Scarlet Raiders were led by Michael Weinbel, who went 4-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI. John Rosado also had a big day, going 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. Every Rutgers-Newark starter registered at least one hit, showcasing the depth of their lineup.

The victory improves Rutgers-Newark's record as they headed into game 2 of the doubleheader.

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 7, Rochester 5
In an exciting back-and-forth contest, Rutgers-Newark baseball emerged victorious over Rochester in Game 2 of their doubleheader, securing a 7-5 win on Sunday afternoon. The game featured momentum swings, with both teams trading leads throughout, but the Scarlet Raiders ultimately came out on top with a strong finish.

Rochester struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. However, Rutgers-Newark responded in the bottom of the fourth, putting up three runs to take a 3-1 advantage. The Yellow Jackets quickly regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a three-run rally, making it 4-3.

The Scarlet Raiders answered back in the bottom of the sixth, plating two runs to regain the lead at 5-4. But Rochester wouldn't go away, as it tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh, setting up a dramatic finish.

In the eighth inning, Rutgers-Newark pulled ahead for good when shortstop Michael Weinbel blasted a two-run home run to left field, giving the Scarlet Raiders a 7-5 lead. Weinbel finished the day 2-for-4 with one run scored and three RBIs, including his crucial homer.

Catcher Devin Rojas also played a key role in the win, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.

On the mound, Joey Santi (1-1) earned the win after coming in during the sixth inning. He pitched 3.0 innings, allowing one earned run and striking out two batters. Vince Taylor recorded his first save of the season, tossing a scoreless 1.0 inning to seal the win.

Ryan Arora took the loss for Rochester after pitching 2.0 innings in relief. He gave up four hits, three earned runs, and struck out one in 11 batters faced.

With the victory, Rutgers-Newark secured the series win and continued its strong play as it prepares for Tuesday's contest against Saint Elizabeth University at 3:30 p.m. at Weequahic Park.
