Matt Connors
CAMDEN, NJ -- Senior second baseman Matt Connors became Rutgers-Newark's all-time base stealing leader in a New Jersey Athletic Conference sweep over Rutgers-Camden in Campbell's Park.

BOX SCORES & PLAY-BY-PLAY
Rutgers-Newark 8, Rutgers-Camden 4
Rutgers-Newark 5, Rutgers-Camden 2

Connors, who has played since a sweep of New Jersey City with a left shoulder injury, swiped a base in each game to push his career total to 60. He passed Chuck Kling who swiped 58 bases from 1996 through 1999.

The twin killing boosted the Scarlet Raiders (16-10, NJAC 8-2) into a second place tie in the NJAC with Rowan. Each club is half a game behind Kean (8-1). The Scarlet Raptors (9-16, NJAC 1-9) slipped into the league cellar.

IN GAME ONE, senior righthander Ryan Williams (2-3) went the distance, giving up just six hits while striking out eight and walking just one to post his second-complete game victory of the season.

Senior shortstop Patrick Reitemeyer went four for five and drove in three runs to spark the 12-hit Raider offense. Senior centerfielder Michael DiCenso went two for five with an RBI.

After the Raptors tied the score at 4-4 with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Connors was in the middle of the decisive three-run sixth-inning Raider rally.

Connors slapped an RBI single to left to plate junior right fielder Mike Ciaramello with what proved to be the winning run. Connors then promptly stole second to put him at the top of the Rutgers-Newark steals list. Reitemeyer delivered a two-out, two-run single through the left side to bring in sophomore designated hitter Ryan Maloney and Connors.

DiCenso had an RBI single in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Junior third baseman Tim Miller led off the second inning with a solo home run and sophomore catcher Christian Kasa had an RBI single as Rutgers-Newark took an early 2-0 lead.

The lead grew to 4-0 in the third inning when DiCenso, Reitemeyer and junior first baseman Chris Ballester strung together consecutive singles with a pair of Raptor errors thrown into the mix.

IN GAME TWO, Raider freshman leftfielder Jimmy Napolitano was a home run short of the cycle while driving in three runs to spearhead a 10-hit attack.

Sophomore righthander Michael Schneider (1-2) went six full innings to get the win, giving up one unearned run on five hits while striking out one and walking two. He battled Raptor starter Tommy Potts who went six innings, allowing two unearned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking three.

Junior righthander Nick Evans came on for two innings of shutout relief before sophomore closer Matt Larangera gave up a run in the ninth before nailing down the decision.

Rutgers-Newark took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Napolitano and a pair of costly errors by the Raptors which allowed Ciaramello to score after drawing a walk.

Napolitano doubled to lead off the eighth, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Connors and scored on an infield grounder off the bat of Reitemeyer to make it 3-1.

Napolitano ripped a two-out, two-run double to centerfield to give the Raiders a four-run lead in the top of the ninth.

DiCenso, Ciaramello and catcher Anthony Palladino notched two hits each for the Raiders.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Lehman College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in Bear & Eagles Riverfront Stadium before hosting Ramapo College in an NJAC game on Thursday.
