Scarlet Raiders Rally To Split Twinbill At Rowan

Rutgers-Newark Baseball

Patrick Reitemeyer
GLASSBORO, NJ – Junior shortstop Patrick Reitemeyer's single in the top of the ninth inning brought home the winning run in game two as Rutgers-Newark split a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader with league-leading Rowan.

Rowan 4, Rutgers-Newark 3
Rutgers-Newark 8, Rowan 7

The Profs (17-10, NJAC 9-3) took the opener 4-3 before Rutgers-Newark (15-15, NJAC 6-4) won 8-7 in the nightcap. The split keeps the Scarlet Raiders in the thick of the conference race.

In the second game, junior second baseman Matt Connors, who went three for five and scored four runs in the game, led off the ninth with an infield single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior rightfielder Michael Cassese before Reitemeyer singled to centerfield.

The hit made a winner of senior closer Michael Hansen who quelled a 3-run uprising in the bottom of the eighth. The lefty inherited a no-out situation with a runner at first. He stranded what would have been the Profs' ninth run at third before getting through the ninth by allowing only a one-out single.

Senior designated hitter Anthony Yeswita capped a 5-run seventh inning with a two run homer to left which gave Rutgers-Newark a 7-3 lead. The right-handed clean-up hitter went three for four with an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the third.

Raider starter Connor Medler went six full innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out four and walking two – leaving the mound with a 3-2 lead.

But Rowan got to the Raider bullpen with a run on three singles against freshman Justin Szablicki in the seventh before jumping on rookie Matt Larangera for three runs on three hits and a walk in the eighth before Hansen put out the fire.

Reitemeyer went two for five in the game with an RBI single in the seventh.

In the opener, junior Billy Cerruti (2-4) lost a pitcher's duel against Rowan's Jeff White. Cerruti allowed four runs on just six hits while striking out five and walking three in seven-plus innings. But White struck out 11 against one walk while scattering six hits in a complete-game performance.

Reitemeyer, who went two for four in the game, hit a solo home run in the top of the eighth to knot the score at 3-3. He also doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning.

But a single by leftfielder Scott Weaver singled and catcher Nick Turano walked to chase Cerruti to open the bottom of the eighth, before Larangera was greeted to the mound by a game-winning RBI single to centerfield by rightfielder Jordan Marsh.

Connors scored the other Raider run, singling to lead off the fourth, moving to third on a single by Yeswita and coming home on an infield error to make it 1-0.

Turano stroked a 2-run double in the fifth before Marsh brought him home with a single to give Rowan a 3-1 lead.

Rutgers-Newark hosts Wilkes University in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in a non-conference game.
