Scarlet Raiders Can't Hold Early Lead At Montclair State

LITTLE FALLS, NJ – Senior third baseman Joe Furnaguera's 2-run homer gave Rutgers-Newark an early lead, but Montclair State bounced back for a 6-4 New Jersey Athletic Conference victory in Yogi Berra Stadium.

Furnaguera, who went three for four, started a 3-run second inning for the Raiders (6-12, NJAC 0-1) who led 4-0 in the third before the Red Hawks (9-4, NJAC 2-0) clawed their back against junior starter Billy Cerruti(1-3). 

Senior designated hitter Anthony Yeswita singled to open the second before Furnaguera hammered his fifth home run of the season over the leftfield wall. Singles by sophomore catcher Anthony Palladino, junior centerfielder Michael DiCenso and junior second baseman Matt Connors added another tally to finish the inning. 

Junior shortstop Patrick Reitemeyer manufactured the final Raider run in the third. He dropped down a bunt single and reached second on a throwing error by the pitcher. He moved to third on an infield grounder by Yeswita before scoring on a wild pitch. 

The Red Hawks got back into the game with three runs against Cerruti in the bottom of the third on three singles and a pair of walks to shave its deficit to one. Cerruti yielded seven hits and five runs in six innings while striking out seven and walking four,

A 2-out solo home run by third baseman Adam Bergman leveled the score in the fifth before the Red Hawks got the deciding runs in the seventh. 

Freshman reliever Justin Szablicki gave up an RBI triple to rightfielder Scott Evangelist, the first batter he faced after replacing Cerruti with no one out in the top of the seventh. Evangelist score an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by centerfielder Matt Boggi before getting out of the inning. Rookie Matt Larangera gave up a hit while striking out two in the eighth to close for the Raiders. 

Connors went two for five to help the Raiders out hit the Red Hawks, 10-9. 

Rutgers-Newark travels to Rutgers-Camden for an 11:30 a.m. NJAC doubleheader tomorrow at Campbell's Field.
