CAMDEN, NJ – Senior designated hitter
Anthony Yeswita's 3-run double in the eighth lifted Rutgers-Newark to a New Jersey Athletic Conference split with Rutgers-Camden at Campbell's Field.
Rutgers-Camden 7, Rutgers-Newark 5
Rutgers-Newark 6, Rutgers-Camden 4
Yeswita capped a four for four game by slamming a bases-loaded double to left field to boost the Raiders (7-13, NJAC 1-2) to a 6-4 win following a 7-5 loss to the Scarlet Raptors (11-6, NJAC 2-1) in the opener.
In game one, sophomore rightfielder
Chris Ballester and junior centerfielder
Michael DiCenso were the only Rutgers-Newark players with two hits as three Scarlet Raptor pitchers combined for a 6-hitter.
Down 4-0 entering the top of the fifth, Ballester and DiCenso had back-to-back RBI singles to cut the deficit in half. But Rutgers-Camden answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame to chase starter
Ryan Williams (0-4) who struck out four and walked two while yielding 11 hits and seven runs in 5-1/3 innings. Freshman reliever
Justin Szablicki closed out the game without yielding another run, giving up four hits while striking out two and walking no one.
A 2-run single by sophomore catcher
Anthony Palladino and a sacrifice fly by Ballester shaved the score to 7-5 in the top of the seventh, but Raptor closer Kyle Ballay struck out two while facing the minimum in the eighth and ninth innings.
In the nightcap, freshman reliever
Matt Larangera (1-0) picked up his first decision in relief of sophomore starter
Connor Medler. Larangera struck out two and walked one while pitching two innings of no-hit relief. Senior closer
Michael Hansen got the save by retiring the Raptors in order after issuing an inning-opening walk in the ninth.
DiCenso doubled to lead off the eighth before junior second baseman
Matt Connors was hit by a pitch and junior leftfielder
Michael Cassese walked to load the bases for the Raiders. Yeswita slammed his sixth double of the season with one out snap the Raiders' 4-game losing streak.
The Raiders seized the early lead as Cassese singled with one out ahead of a triple to left centerfield by junior shortstop
Patrick Reitemeyer in the first. Yeswita followed with an RBI single to left, but the Raptors jumped on Medler for two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the frame to even the score.
A 2-out RBI single by senior first baseman
Matt Lingo in the sixth gave Rutgers-Newark a brief lead before Rutgers-Camden answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning – making the score 4-3.
Rutgers-Newark hosts DeSales at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday in a non-conference battle in Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
