As a student in 1942, Al DeCicco was co-captain of the Barringer High School fencing team that won city, state and Metropolitan championships and claimed the Bittle Trophy.  After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, DeCicco came back to Barringer to coach the fencing team from 1950 through 1955 – stringing together six consecutive undefeated seasons. 

In 1956, he was appointed fencing coach at Rutgers-Newark.  In 1959, he started the first women’s fencing team which saw its first winning season in 1961.  Again in 1961, the Rutgers-Newark men’s team won the only National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District 31 championship I school history.  The men’s team went unbeaten in 1962. 

Named the golf coach at Rutgers-Newark in 1960, leading the squad to an unbeaten dual match season in 1962 when the Raiders finished fourth in the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Championship.  Raider ace John Rockefellar III took medalist honors at the Eastern Intercollegiate tournament.
