Hall of Fame
Although Jerry Izenberg did not excel on the court, diamond or mat, he richly deserves membership in the Rutgers Newark Athletic Hall of Fame. Jerry was one of the prime movers in the establishment of the Hall of Fame and has long been an eloquent spokesman for the ideals and goals of the Newark College’s athletic program.
For more than the past 30 years we have seen Jerry grow from a sports reporter for the school newspaper, the Observer, into one of the most respected nationally syndicated daily sportswriters, a distinction he has held for some time. In addition to being named sportswriter of the year for New Jersey on three occasions, he has numerous magazine, radio and television credits.
He has championed the cause of bringing academic integrity to college sports programs. In addition, he has constantly prodded and reminded college administrators that the primary function of a university is education – not merely the exploitation of students for their athletic prowess and to then discard them ill-equipped to enter the business world when their playing eligibility has ended.
It is because of men like Jerry Izenberg that honesty in all college athletic programs can be achieved.
