Immediately upon graduation from Montclair State in 1962, Coach Mizerek was hired by Rutgers-Newark initially to lead their wrestling and men’s tennis teams. He guided the Raider wrestling to a 186-69 record over 20 years, earning three NAIA District 31 championships and producing eight All-Americans.
In 1981, he relinquished his wrestling coaching duties to take over the women’s tennis program and started his tenure with a perfect 13-0 campaign. With his guidance, the women’s team captured the Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship in 1993 and 1994. The Raiders women’s teams have won better than 80% of the time and have not lost more than four dual matches in a year, totaling 205 victories against 37 defeats through the 1996-97 season.
Coach Mizerek is now in his 36th season as men’s tennis coach, holding a 330-99 (.769) record. His coaching accomplishments with the team include a streak of 45 consecutive dual match victories between 1981 and 1988, an NAIA District 31 Crown, four Central Athletic Collegiate Conference titles and four New Jersey Athletic Conference championships in 1985, 1990, 1992, and 1996.
Coach Mizerek is presently the most successful coach in the history of Rutgers University (all campuses, including New Brunswick). He has coached his teams to a record of 762 victories with a 78 percent win to loss ratio.
He was a 1997 inductee to the Montclair State University Hall-of-Fame where, in 1958, he started the club wrestling program. One year later, the club program achieved varsity status. As a participant on Montclair’s club and varsity teams, he went undefeated in regular season dual matches during each of his three years of competition, earning three individual Metropolitan Wrestling Tournament championships.
