Twelve days after graduating high school, Michael Faulkner enlisted in the Marine Corps. His four-year term included a tour of Vietnam. When he returned home in 1968, he enrolled at Florissant Valley (Mo.) Community College, where he discovered fencing. When he transferred to NCAS two years later, he continued in the sport and compiled a collegiate record of 116-13. Along the way, he captured an array of state and 

National titles, too numerous to mention here. He was fencing team captain and MVP from 1970-73. After graduation, Faulkner won the American Athletic Dueling Association national championship in 1974 and ’75. As recently as 1980, he was ranked nationally in both foil and epee. His career record includes 18 gold medals, 19 silver medals and nine bronze medals from various competitions. 

While at NCAS, Faulkner also excelled in baseball, finishing with a career batting average of .311. He led the team in stolen bases in 1971 and ’73, in total hits in 1973, and in fielding efficiency (.980) in 1971. In 1973, he was named to the All-State first team. 

A member of Mensa, an exclusive society for people with superior intellect, Faulkner works as the Director of Marketing for the Direct Marketing Association of New York. 

He and his wife, Jo-Ann Ortmann, have four children; Kenneth, Tara, and twins Stephen and Michelle.
