Joe Macula’s wrestling opponents fell with such regularity that school records fell with them.

His final total after four years of going to the mat was 87 wins, 10 losses and a tie, the record for most career wins. That string was highlighted in his big year in 1977 with an incredible 22-1 performance.

That was a record number of wins in a single year and earned him that Cataldo award, an award created to cite those who, by example, exhibit the best attributes of an all around student athlete.

Macula was a participant in four NAIA District tournaments, won three, and was second in the other. He was a four-time All Conference selection and placed in three of the four Metropolitan tournaments in which he competed. Three of the four years he wrestled, he had the added honor of serving as team captain.

Macula graduated in 1978 with a degree in psychology, is employed as a sales manager for a machine company, and lives with is family in River Edge, New Jersey.
