Dr. De Fronzo was an outstanding basketball player both offensively and defensively from 1978 through 1981. In 1980-81 his field goal percentage was a phenomenal 69.9%, ranking him among the top shooters nationally in that category. Defensively, in that year, he averaged twelve rebounds per game making him the team’s leading rebounder. He also played excellent defense getting numerous steals.
According to the coach, Mr. David Wright, “Carl was a very tough and aggressive player.” In a tremendous win over Western Connecticut, Carl De Fronzo’s 28 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists sparked Rutgers-Newark. He was team captain of the basketball team and elected to the All-Star Team in 1981.
Academically, Dr. De Fronzo won the Scholar Athlete Award in 1982, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Magna Cum Laude as a pre-med major in Zoology.
