Hall of Fame
It was half a century ago and Ed Janiga was the star of the College of Pharmacy (Newark) and Rutgers-Newark team. Seven footers were in short supply 50 years ago, and Janiga held down the center position at 6’2”.
He scored 196 points in the 1950-51 season, followed that with 307 and then 370. In 1952-53, he was chosen a member of the Pharmacy League All Star team and voted the second outstanding player in the circuit.
In the 1953-54 season, students from the College of Pharmacy and Rutgers-Newark combined for a single team. Janiga was a solid team player and, though he was an excellent shooter, often passed of the ball.
In his final year, he scored 309 points for his team, giving him a grand total of 1,182 points for his four years of basketball, a considerable number in those days gone by. Janiga was one of the true pioneers of the hoop sport in his era, passing down a traditional team effort philosophy.
Janiga was a pharmacist and lived in Wyckoff, NJ prior to his passing in 1996.
