As a freshman in 1992 Rich Scalabrini started in right field and batted fourth.
Four years later the All-County standout from Ridgefield Park High was still starring in those spots for Rutgers-Newark. He came in like a star and left in storybook fashion
In 1995, the team posted a fine 22-12 season, but the crowning glory was the winning of the ECAC tournament championship, the first time a Rutgers-Newark baseball team ever won a post-season tournament. And as he did in his entire career, Scalabrini was the sparkplug.
Scalabrini was twice named first team All-State and All Conference. In his final year he took Division III honors with 16 home runs and he left as the all-time four base hitter at Rutgers with 30.
