Hall of Fame
Donald Harris is one of the most versatile athletes ever to attend Rutgers-Newark.
Starting in 1955, he piled up 11 varsity letters, four each in baseball and golf (teams he co-captained) and three in basketball.
He was known for his scrappy, never-say-die type of play – a solid, consistent player who knew how to win. In baseball he was a 300 hitter who seldom had a slump and held down the third base position in the field with great consistency. In golf, you could count on him for the low 80’s and in basketball he used his 5’10” frame well as a passer, field general, and accurate jump shooter.
Harris was honored with the Outstanding Senior Athlete award, Bronze Key for extra curricular activities and also made the Dean’s list in spite of his hectic schedule.
He received a B.S. in accounting in 1959, a masters in economics in 1961, served in the Army, and became a CPA. He later entered a seminary and for the past 30 years served as pastor in churches in northern New Jersey.
Harris, as versatile in life as he was in athletics, has been married for 31 years, has five children, three grandchildren, and lives in Wyckoff, New Jersey.
