Al Trank and Rutgers-Newark baseball are synonymous.

During his four-year career, he played in every game, and the record book shows his impact through and through. He finished with a .349 batting average and slugging percentage of .539.

And in every other statistical category – hits, doubles, triples, home runs, runs batted in and stolen bases – his name is in the top rankings.

Joe Picillo, his coach, noted, “In 25 years of coaching at Rutgers-Newark, Al was possibly the best offensive player I ever worked with.”

Trank also was outstanding on defense, playing both the infield and outfield, finishing his career as a centerfielder. A star from 1978 through 1981, Trank was team captain in 1981, was named to the Central Atlantic Conference all league team three times, and twice was selected to play in the New Jersey Baseball Writers All-Star college game.

He was honored with the scholar athlete award, received his MBA from Rutgers and is a senior vice president with Prudential Insurance in Newark.

Al and his wife, Laurie, have four children and live in Mendham, New Jersey.
