Raymond Brienza has served as Assistant Dean at the New York University School of Medicine and was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Rutgers the State University of New Jersey, for a six-year term.

As reported in the Alumni Association News, “His interests in Rutgers have been continuous in various capacities, and he possesses a solid record of sincere service and distinguished efforts on behalf of the University.”

Prior to his work as Assistant Dean, Brienza administered an annual $13 million financial aid program as director of financial aid at NYU. From 1957-62, he was a member of the Rutgers admissions and alumni relations staff. He served as Associate Director of Admissions at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1962-67.

Brienza’s professional activities included serving on the scholarship selection committee of the United Federation of Teachers, membership in state, regional, and national organizations in financial aid, and publication of articles on financial aid.

Brienza is a past president of the Alumni Association of the Newark College of Arts and Sciences and a former class agent for the Rutgers Fund. When at NCAS, he was editor-in-chief of the Encore and also served on the Observer.

In addition to his academic achievements, Brienza has had a distinguished career as a writer. Beginning in 1970, he worked for the Newark Evening News where he covered high school sports, started the first statewide school wrestling column, and covered harness racing. He won a Martini and Rossi national award for his coverage of fencing.

Since 1971, Brienza has worked for The Star Ledger as a harness racing columnist and reporter. He has been a handicapper for the Meadowlands harness racing since 1997 and writes Brienza’s Analysis, which appears daily (January through August). He is a three-time winner of the John Hervey Award for harness racing reporting.

Brienza received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in education from Rutgers-Newark.
