In January 1986 at Wood-Ridge High School, Susan DeAlessandro established a single game scoring record for boys and girls basketball with 49 points in a game against St. Cecelia High School. She finished her career there with 1,494 points and averaged 29.0 points per game in her season year. Additionally, she received the Scholar Athlete Award at Wood-Ridge.
Carol Meegan, her basketball coach at Rutgers-Newark stated: “As a player, she was a role model to her teammates both as an athlete and scholar. Sue not only led the Raiders in scoring and rebounding, but in leadership.
She accomplished a milestone in scoring 1,000 points in her college career, a feat not many reach. At the completion of her senior year, Sue was chosen to play in an all-star game of college players from throughout the state and held her own against women from Division I programs.
Sue also played softball for me and led the team swinging her bat and fielding at shortstop. Against Monmouth, she was spiked in the leg attempting to tag out a runner at second. Twenty minutes later after receiving stitches, she returned and finished the game. Sue ranks in my top five of superior players that I have had the opportunity to coach.”
DeAlessandro graduated with a B.A. degree in biology while making the Dean’s List in each of her eight semesters. She was the Rutgers-Newark Female Scholar-Athlete in 1990.
