No doubt about it, William Tyson knew hot to put a basketball through the hoop.

A 1968 NCAS graduate, Tyson held the school record for most career points scored (1513) for 12 years. He also set a school record for most points scored in a season (448).

Tyson came from Bloomfield High School to NCAS and promptly became a member of the starting five. By his junior year he was a 1,000-point scorer and made first team All-State. He was a third team selection as a sophomore and a second team choice as a senior.

As captain of the team in his senior year, Tyson was ranked ninth nationally by the NAIA in foul shooting by hitting 87.6 percent from the line.

Tyson has remained active in basketball for the past 12 years by officiating high school games in the area. The Verona resident is an Essex County senior probation officer and is the owner of the Window Works store in Little Falls.

He and his wife, Sonia Parry Tyson, have two children, Dana and Glenn.

Tyson said he was “thrilled and honored” when informed of his induction into the Rutgers-Newark Athletic Hall of Fame and thought the concept of the Hall was “good for the school.”
