Laura Salinardi doesn’t like the word “pioneer.” “It makes me sound so old,” said the Hasbrouck Heights resident.
But when Ms. Salinardi first came to NCAS in 1975, women’s sports programs were just beginning. Ms. Salinardi took advantage of the situation and became the first bona-fide “star” of women’s sports at NCAS, by playing four years of varsity basketball, two years of tennis and one year of softball.
She was named to the All-Conference basketball team in 1978 and ’79, and represented NCAS on the North Jersey All-Star team in 1979. She was the first recipient of the Most Outstanding Female Athlete award in 1979 and won the Scholar Athlete award the same year by maintaining a 3.3 cumulative average.
A political science major, she went on to complete her Master’s Degree in Public Administration at NCAS. She currently heads the computer-training program for the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. Ms. Salinardi serves on the Hasbrouck Heights Planning Board and recently started a chapter of the Young Republicans Club in her town.
