In a sport best known by the general public from what they see in adventure movies, Rutgers-Newark was fortunate to have an outstanding participant in the pure form of the sport of fencing. Dr. George Kane put together a string of accomplishments during his four years at Rutgers-Newark, which still stand as a model for future achievement. In his freshman year of 1962, George compiled a record of 35 wins and 7 losses fencing foil. He also won the North Atlantic Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Foil Team Championship (NAIFC) and the NAIA Foil Team Championship. During the same year he was second runner-up in the Newark College of Engineering Intercollegiate Fencing Tournament (NCEIFT). In his sophomore year George was co-captain of the fencing team and won the NAIA Foil Championship, which that year was a one man per team event, and was first runner-up in the NCEIFT.

In his junior year George continued as co-captain and helped form the varsity club and was the first recipient of the club’s Outstanding Fencer of the Year Award in addition to winning the NCEIFT tournament. In his senior year, George was the sole captain of the team and won the foil championship of the NAIFC tournament.

George presently is a dentist practicing in Huntington Station, New York, and is active in the Kiwanis International and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
