Luz Zambrano was the first varsity tennis player at Rutgers-Newark to win over 100 matches.  This outstanding accomplishment occurred when she played varsity tennis from 1985-88.  In 1985 during her rookie year, Zambrano played third singles and third doubles.  As a sophomore in 1986, Zambrano attained the first singles and first doubles position.  She stayed as the top-flight player in singles and doubles throughout her final three seasons.  Respected by her teammates, she served as captain and received the Coaches Award for three consecutive years (1986, 1987 and 1988).  She was selected to the All-New Jersey Athletic Conference first team in singles in 1987-88 and in doubles in 1986-87.  At her time of induction into the Rutgers-Newark Athletic Hall of Fame, Zambrano was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army serving as a nurse.
