Being the first soccer player in Rutgers-Newark history to score 100 points during his collegiate career is no easy feat, but one certain to garner acclaim. Such is the legacy of nominee forward Danny Lopes, the Rutgers-Newark all-time leading goal, assist, and point scorer whose college career spawned 42 goals, 3 assists, and 116 points. The recipient of the 1998 Male-Scholar Athlete Award and 1997 Coaches Award, Lopes was appointed to the New Jersey All-State 2nd Team and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) 2nd Team for two consecutive seasons in 1996 and 1997 when the Rutgers Raiders posted back-to-back winning seasons (12-6 and 10-7). During his rookie season, Lopes ranked 1st and 2nd in NJAC scoring and points, respectively, with 16 goals and 40 points, triggering an NJAC All-Conference Honorable Mention and Rookie of the Year Runner Up. That same year, the Rutgers Raiders took home the Mayor’s Cup for the first time in the University’s history and defended the title until 1997.

Mr. Lopes is presently living in Union, New Jersey, and is working for Physician’s World as a staff accountant.
